Drawings of women writers by Ryan Sheffield (re-colored). Sometimes people question why I, a "White' woman tend to list more Black women writers than White when asked who my favorites are. My answer is that writers like Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Paule Marshall are unafraid to tackle tough subjects with honesty and without excuse. Sure, they write about racial issues but not just that. Rape, incest, spousal abuse and the less graphic issues of mother and daughter relationships are topics (among others) that shouldn't be swept under the rug. If literature is meant to convey the human condition then we must address all of it.
