I am really confused about AI do we have to pay for the programme ...can we alter our own photo's. do we have to choose an image from an AI programme... which AI programme is the best to choose....I would really like some advice please.

Some programmes cost money, others are free,at least the smaller versions of them.
The ones that manipulate images, do it in different ways, but as I understand it and depending on the programme it works mostly by word prompts. So if you type you want : a bird on a branch, blue feathers, large eyes, oil paint, style Rembrandt, That AI programme will search not only its own library of images, but the internet,to find images of birds, large eyes ,blue feathers ,and it will copy the brush strokes of oil paint, and mimic the style of Rembrant, ( in some cases using part of a painting by him,( there in the controversy ) it will then make a composite of all the images it has collected, and make 1 image that fills the criteria you asked for. Sometimes that becomes a weird looking creature, others a beautiful thing. Depending on the programme, you might get several different choices.
Other times you can do your own image, and ask for :a bluer sea,a greener tree, same photo different season.
The text programmes, can write for example a draft of a job application for you. You type ex, secondary school, barmaid, hospitality,o level English ,creative,
And it will make it into a coherent application.
I am very much a novice in my understanding of this, but that is as far as I know the gist of it.
Others here can tell you what are the best options if you want to try it out. Read also .This thread

There's an AI (although I didn't know it was called that when I joined) called Deep Dream Generator which is free. It's kind of fun to use once in awhile. There are lots of them out there and I'm not a huge fan of anything AI. For instance, you can have an AI completely remake your profile picture and it does look amazing, however, it's like 7.99 a week and I refuse to pay that. I also use an app call Face Tune and really like it, but they're just recently added the AI feature and I probably won't use it. I don't want "bots" doing anything for me. Unfortunately, it's the future and we can either choose to accept or deny it. Anytime you see those "how can we help you" pop-ups, it's probably a "bot". Not real person.

I'm in two minds about A.I. and where it should or should not be used, and especially in relation to this site.

If you look at my two latest pages in the gallery, the backgrounds are A.I. generated. They are for a fantasy challenge so I'm thinking these A.I. images work well for that type of challenge. A.I. can be a lot of fun. I feel it's possible to use it for a basis and then change and add to it to make it less artificial looking and with a more individual creative touch. Having said that, I wouldn't like to see A.I. just take over. I think of it more as a tool to inspire our creativity.

I understand that not everyone is going to be a fan of A.I. When I was co-owner of Digital Design Den all those years ago, someone posted a page that didn't use a personal photo, but an image from the internet. It was all 'shock / horror' at the time that somebody had the audacity to use an image that was not personal and was from the dreaded internet!! Now days, it's very much the norm. Our hobby has evolved and continues to evolve. My personal feeling is that A.I. images have their place in our hobby and it's how you choose to use them.

I'm thinking about putting an A.I. category in the gallery. What do members think about that? I'd be interested to get your feedback on that idea !!

Thank you Vivi,Sherry and Robyn,I think I will give it a miss for now...
If you do put an AI in the Gallery, I think more might get interested in it Robyn, maybe they can explain how they used their image to change it.xx

Hi Mary, like Robyn I have some reservations about ai but more so about writing than art. Which is to say, I taught writing and think I do well in that field but I'm lacking in artistic talent. My son got that. I wanted to check out how ai worked for art so searched for info about various sites. I'm not going to pay to use it when I can finagle clipart and extracted images to do some enjoyable digital art. However, I have (as you've seen) tried a couple free programs that got good reviews. The free programs, at least the ones I've tried, allow you x number of creations per day unless you want to pay for more. I've mostly used starryai here https://starryai.com/ and I've only created using a prompt I wrote. I've been happy with those creations. Recently, like for recent challenges, I tried Night Cafe which you can find here: https://creator.nightcafe.studio/explore that link will take you to a page that shows examples of what has been done. Night Cafe is free but not sure how many credits per day. You can also earn credits by letting your creations be published on the site. Hope this helps.

I think the AI category would be a good idea

:-i I agree with @Ev ,it would be a good idea to try out a category for AI. It is here to stay, one one has ever reversed inventions and so called progress....

I haven't used much AI nor created much but I will say some of the portraits are pretty good if the eyes aren't dead looking. I have noticed an increase of AI images in Pixabay.
I may use the AI portraits in some of my LO's as I am always a little leery of using model portraits even if they are from sites like Pixabay.
Possibly would it be good to claim some AI was used in the credits? or should even partial AI use be put in the Assisted Pages Gallery?

I've put a couple of mine in the new category (as an additional category). Only part of those pages have used A.I. I have detailed what was A.I. in the description.

I was really against AI in the beginning, I am easing back a bit though. I guess my head decided its "Art". As I am sure most of you know, I like to scrap my own pictures, it gives me a chance to relive my memories, even just looking through my directories for a suitable candidate. Also I sometimes print into book, I would never print a layout with a picture created with AI.

I recently did a layout for the colour challenge with a pic I created in AI, I just felt like doing something different. I doubt it would be come the normal way I scrap though.

I do realise that I am very very lucky to have the photos that I do to choose from for scrapping, and that I don't have to rely on free from the WWW. I understand not everyone has photos to choose from, and for them they need materials for scrapping.

I have added my last AI layout to the AI gallery, I think the AI gallery is a wonderful idea.

I wonder if we could even have a challenge for AI creations? Not that I am a huge huge fan, but I might give this a go if you think its OK @Robyn ?

I just realised that every paragraph / sentence above starts with the word I...

I noticed - I love seeing the photos y'all have - have fun with the AI

@Jody, to me YOUR scrapping is the very essence of what scrapbooking was originally all about.....and I LOVE that about all your pages. I would hate it if we ever lost that type of scrapping. It's interesting and informative and of course a record of what has gone on in your life and the lives of family and friends.

But I feel there is room for both here at JA. The subtitle of the site says - Digital Art and Scrapbooking. I feel that A.I. can be part of the digital art description. Members can take it or leave it, and I certainly have NO wish for it to take over the gallery!

In September Karen (Kakleidesigns) will be taking a well earned rest from Mystery Doors and Roulette. They are a lot of work. However, both Karen and I have learned a lot about organizing this type of challenge. I will be conducting a challenge (working title - Lucky Dip) where you will request downloads from me. Some (but not all) of these downloads will contain A.I. produced stuff.

Perhaps an A.I. challenge in October? Like me, most members are only just coming to terms with how to use and take advantage of A.I. produced images. It can be expensive too. From what I can see a lot of these programs offer limited 'free' options. But once you use up your few free credits, you have to buy. Free credits are used up extremely quickly - usually only enough credits to generate approx. 5 images. Then you have to wait a period of time before your next lot of free credits are generated. If you are experimenting with word prompts etc you need a lot more than 5 goes to get things right!

I really like the look of the ai images i have seen so much of over at pixabay. have no idea how to do it myself though.
i guess you need full photoshop to do it . do you just take a photo and convert it like using an action.

I have a question...hoping someone has an answer. Sometimes I need more than 1 photo but want the same person or people...not 4 different ones. I use Adobe Firefly and Staryai.

I am getting used to seeing how this AI works now,I have watched a few videos,I will be attempting to have a go soon.xx
