October Progressive

love a challenging challenge
Challenge Host - October
Welcome to Octobers progressive.

I thought to my self, there are a lot of challenges this month, and a lot of other things, people might be in to also going on this month, so perhaps an easy straightforward ,no frills progressive is called for. But then I thought ;

Naeh…. this is Just Art , lets have some fun…

SO , let us make a template, our very own design, and in our very own style. - With a few prompts of course, but still so much your own, it might not look like a progressive, but it will be….Trust me…

So Photoshop , Elements , Affinity users please make sure that everything is on its own layer, at least for now. Craft Artist users the layers are not important yet for you, ( apart from the background being on its normal separate layer ( default ) but you will have to add a layer or two towards the end. Sorry I don’t know how it works in any other program, but looking at every ones pages here, you all know what to do. When you save please do not flatten,group, or join….

Here is day 1;

Start with a white or transparent background. (this in all programmes should be locked by default ? )

Now ,make a square shape, and make it large enough to fill your page. Colour this a pale blue or pale pink. This is the Background layer of your template. ( layer 1 )

Make an other square shape and make it slightly smaller than the first , all edges should show underneath. Colour this a pale green.

Now think carefully because this next one you will be stuck with, Choose a shape, any shape, triangle , square, round, heart, star, half moon, Whatever takes your fancy. This is the shape your photos, and /or papers will be clipped to ( eventually - not now ) so it important it is a shape you like.

Make 5 of the same kind of shape but different sizes ,and make each a different colour.

Place them from the middle towards one or two of your edges in any loose "cluster type " group you like.

Please post your page in the temporary progressive gallery ( this will be deleted later on in the month by Robyn ) And here ofcourse The last page we will post in the progressive gallery , and it will stay there as long as we want it to. Thanks )

Have fun. See you on Tuesday !
I am adding my own day 1. I will always do this late , because I do not want to influence how you make your page.

Welcome to day 2 ;
I know that most of you know how to do stuff in CraftArtist ( a lot of you much better than me ) but I have noticed some new members ( yeah) who use it, and a few of you said you haven't made templates before. So in the gallery there is a mini tutorial on how to make and save a clipping mask. Today do only step 1. please ,step 2 (- both options-) is for another day.
So Link To tutorial in gallery
Today we will have some fun painting a clipping mask that will be used at the back of your shapes ( Like paint ) to add a bit of dimension to the template.
Make a new separate page ;open a new document, Affinity / PS /PSE users choose transparent background .300 dpi size minimum 8x8 inches but if you prefer you can do a 12x12, just don't paint to the edges. CA users click insert page , don't worry about the white default background.
Choose any colour to paint with, but it will be easier to see dark grey or white, Starting with a shaped brush, don't use the rounded ones , and a opacity of around 80 , paint some strokes here and there,then changing the opacity to less ,paint large not connecting blobs. You can change brushes if you need to, as you make sure the middle of the paint is connected. splashy edges are fine.
When you are happy save as PNG, preserve transparency , CA users see tut in gallery. Name it PAINT MASK 1 .
Now take your new mask into your page. make sure this is on a layer between your green paper, and all of the shapes .
If any of you feel you need to rearrange your shapes, now is your chance, do it now because there will be no altering later on.
Stop there today.
Long explanation for a small thing, sorry, but I want you to to be comfy with it and have fun.

See you all Thursday
DAY 3
Step 1 of day 3

As you can see from the example we are doing a title corner today. - But before we get to that insert a rectangle Shape somewhere in your cluster of shapes, fill it with a different colour to everything else. ( if your shapes are already rectangles then choose a different shape, as long as you can have a bit of writing on it later.) This will be your journal card.
Step 2 of day 3 .
CraftArtist Users please add a new layer. ( The big plus sign in the layers panel )
From now on -CA users - today work only on layer 2. Everyone else, make sure your layers are separate, and you don't have 2 elements on the same layer ( especially check the journal card ).....
Make 2 narrow long rectangles and fill them with white ( paper strips) , place them so they form an "overlapping " corner ,in the corner of your page you have most space. Make 2 small versions of your original shape and place them above your paper strip.
now like on day 2 on a separate page make a small mask, remembering to vary the opacity ,name it mask 2 small and Save it as a PNG ,transparent BG. Now bring your mask on to your page, and place it under the paper strips. At an angle, on top of that Make another filled shape slightly larger than before, but small enough that you can see the mask peeping out.
Write the word TITLE and place on top of the last shape ( not inside it , just anywhere it looks good )
That is all for Day 3.
I hope you are enjoying your selves.
See you Saturday.

Day 4 (take 1 )
My this is turning in to a super long thread.....
I will add a screen print tutorial for Craft Artist to the gallery in about half and hour, I am having to redo the text.
Today you have some optional choices. Since the templates you made are many and varied in size and shape ( pun intended :) ) it is up to you if you want to do both steps or only 1 ( either or , doesn't matter )
1. Element placement guide ; choose a flower shape ( for ease , when you add elements they can be anything ) Since your main focal point is going to be your shapes, place your element guides ( 3 of them ) so they form a triangle around the outside of your shape. Element, PS ,Affinity users call the layers placement guide. CA users do this on layer 2 .
2. Make a ( edge ) overlay. On a new separate page , same size as your template and with a transparent background ( for those that can ,CA users don't worry ) you can do 2 different ones , either or , or none at all , is fine
2a ;
Take a shape with a bit of an edge [ A flower a sunburst, a scribble, what ever.] ( CA hint ;use a stencil and drop a paper in it. ) PSE/ PS users the shapes that come with the program are great. Place it so only a tiny portion is showing along the edge. Do this on all 4 sides . CA Users convert to Bitmap then crop the shape to the size of the paper. PS , Affinity just crop to page size.
Save as PNG as in day 2.Call it Edge overlay . Now bring the saved PNG on to your page and resize so it fits your inner paper ,make sure it is right on top of your green paper . ( CA layer 1 ) , and give it any blend mode you like , "Soft Light "is nice and subtle, but you can use "Multiply" if you like an in your face edge .
2b ; Make an overlay in the same way as step 2a, but place the element whole in the middle of your page, Give it a colour black is to harsh for this one. Give it a small bevelled edge ( from styles ) and make it 50 percent transparent before you save as PNG>.
Apply to the middle of your green paper, give it a Blend mode.
Have fun , this is all optional, so dont get in a spin over crowding your page.AS you can see I chose to do the edge one only.
IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT ; Your template is now ready (I am not adding shadows because it is different in every program , and you all know how to add them last.... ) Here is the IMPORTANT bit Save your template as a Craft Artist Document, or a Photoshop Document , an Affinity document , what ever ever program you have. Do not flatten , group, merge..... Call it MY Template . After this when you are asked "save changes to MY template ? " Say No !

Great challenge! I have a question...can the shapes overlap eachother?
